Wiki Science Competition UK 2025 - December 10 to January 10
Photograph science for Wikipedia and win!

About the competition

Wiki Science is an international photography competition held every 2 years to promote free and open knowledge. In 2025, the United Kingdom hosted a regional competition for the first time since 2019.

Whether you’re a professional scientist, researcher, student, educator, or simply a science enthusiast, we’d love to see your photos of science and scientists in the UK from across seven distinct categories:

  • People in Science
  • Microscopy images
  • Non-photography media
  • Image sets
  • Wildlife & nature
  • Astronomy
  • General

Good luck to all those who entered between December 10 until January 10! #WikiScience, #WikiScience 2025 #WSC2025.

Why get involved?

There are lots of great reasons to get involved in the UK's Wiki Science competition:

  • Global Recognition – Your work reaches millions through Wikipedia, Wikimedia Commons, and educational platforms worldwide.
  • Professional Development – Enhance your scientific communication and visual documentation skills.
  • Community Impact – Contribute to open knowledge that supports education, research, and public understanding of science.
  • Awards and Prizes – Outstanding contributions receive national and international recognition.

How to get involved?

Create your account

If you don't have one yet, you can create a global account that will give you a specific username on all Wikimedia platforms (including Wikimedia Commons) when you log in.

Please notice that as a newly registered user you need to wait at least four days before uploading a video file, while images can be uploaded right after the registration.

Please also note that we encourage you to enter your email address on your Wikimedia profile or we may be unable to contact you if you win a prize.

Check the rules

The main rules are listed on the Competition website. Here we provide a brief summary.

The competition runs from 00:00, December 10 2025 until 23:59, January 10 2026.

There is no limit to the number of files one can upload. If you upload more than one file, only one highest prize is eligible. The rest shall be awarded to the next highest scoring entrant.

The image must be published under a free use license or as public domain. The possible licenses are CC-BY-SA 4.0, CC-BY 4.0, CC0 1.0, and similar.

Images entered into the competition must be taken or authored by submitter of the image using e-mail registered Wikimedia account. In case of multiple authors, all the co-authors’ names must be provided. In case of institutional uploads, submission can be made by a representative of the organization.

The image needs to have a good scientific description. Description in English is required for every submitted image, although descriptions in other languages are also welcomed.

Upload the highest resolution possible. The image size should be at least 2 megapixels, unless the technology used does not allow it. The image must not contain water marks, logos, additional text, graphics (except scales), or insets.

Upload your images and videos!

Entries are now closed. Thank you to everyone who uploaded images and videos. Good luck!
